A Journey into Early Hollywood’s Exotic Revival Architecture

Erected in 1925, The Nirvana stands as a striking testament to the Revivalist architectural styles that flourished in the early 20th century. Its original designers, captivated by the notion of “exoticism,” drew architectural inspiration from Chinese aesthetics. However, in a manner characteristic of early Hollywood’s romanticised vision, the resulting style was less an authentic representation of Chinese design and more a Western interpretation of it.

This fascination with imagined exotic locales also influenced the Spanish and Egyptian-inspired architecture that emerged around Hollywood during this period. Interestingly, the building’s creators reportedly never even journeyed to Asia, instead basing their designs on a perceived idea of what audiences might expect to find in China. Notably, the building’s brick construction was a significant departure from the prevalent wooden structures of the time, a structural feature that also rendered it remarkably fireproof.

Golden Age Grandeur and Innovation

During Hollywood’s nascent Golden Age of the 1920s and 1930s, The Nirvana was considered a prestigious address, providing luxurious apartments for actors and actresses filming in town. The building integrated several unique and forward-thinking features for its time:

  • Technological Novelty: a particularly innovative feature at the time of its construction was the inclusion of a built-in radio in every apartment wall, which was considered a true luxury.
  • Preserved Atmosphere: stepping into The Nirvana’s opulent lobby is akin to travelling back in time, where the atmosphere of Old Hollywood permeates the very walls.

Restoration and Hidden Discoveries

The exquisite details of the building have been meticulously preserved and enhanced by a major restoration project initiated in 2017, which brought the structure back to its original grandeur from nearly a century ago. A major highlight of this extensive restoration occurred in the main lobby, where a hidden gem—a beautiful original mural—was painstakingly revealed through the skilled stratigrapher work of Elisabetta Perfetti.

Historical Recognition and Current Use

Recognised for its immense historical significance, The Nirvana was officially designated a historical site by the City of Los Angeles in 2005, receiving historical marker number 816. Today, the building has been adapted for contemporary urban use while maintaining its heritage:

  • Current Capacity: the building comprises a total of 42 units.
  • Distribution: exactly 8 units currently operate as hotel rooms for short-term visitors, while the remaining apartments serve as long-term residential rentals.

In a contemporary urban landscape increasingly dominated by indistinguishable apartment blocks, The Nirvana offers a unique and valuable glimpse into Hollywood’s formative years, providing a captivating snapshot of a bygone era. For those seeking a brief respite from the vibrant energy of modern Hollywood Boulevard, a short stroll into the realm of Hollywoodland will lead you to the enduring charm of The Nirvana apartment building.
