Preserving Monumental Art: Expert Conservation for Wall Paintings and Murals

Safeguarding Art that defines our Spaces

Wall paintings and murals, from ancient frescoes to modern installations, are powerful forms of artistic expression that transform and define the spaces they inhabit. The remnants of past civilizations, whether monumental structures emerging from the earth or delicate objects unearthed by excavation, offer profound insights into human history.

Unlike portable artworks, these monumental pieces are intrinsically linked to their architectural support, making them vulnerable to a unique set of environmental and structural threats. Issues such as dampness in walls, salt efflorescence, structural movement, pollution, and past neglect can lead to severe deterioration, including detachment of plaster layers, paint loss, and surface alterations. EC2 Art Conservation brings dedicated expertise to the intricate field of wall painting conservation.

Our approach combines a thorough understanding of historical painting techniques (fresco, secco, oil on plaster, etc.) with advanced diagnostic methods and carefully considered treatment strategies. We prioritize in-situ conservation whenever possible, working to stabilize the artwork within its original architectural context. Our team is experienced in managing large-scale projects, collaborating with architects, engineers, and site managers to ensure the long-term preservation of these significant cultural assets.

Comprehensive Conservation for Wall Paintings and Murals

EC2 Art Conservation provides a comprehensive suite of services for the preservation of wall paintings and murals, tailored to the specific materials, techniques, and conditions of each artwork.

Our key services in this specialized area include:

  • Condition Assessment & Technical Analysis
Detailed on-site examination, including mapping of deterioration phenomena (cracks, detachments, salt efflorescence, biological growth, previous repairs), and scientific analysis of pigments, binders, and plaster layers to understand the original technique and causes of decay.
  • Environmental Monitoring & Control Advice
Assessing the environmental conditions impacting the wall painting and providing recommendations for mitigating factors such as humidity, temperature fluctuations, and light exposure.
  • Consolidation of Plaster Layers & Paint Film
Addressing issues of detachment (distacco, scagliatura) by re-adhering loose plaster layers to the substrate and consolidating friable or flaking paint layers using appropriate, reversible consolidants.
  • Cleaning & Removal of Overpaint/Inappropriate Coatings
Careful removal of surface dirt, soot, discolored varnishes, unstable previous restorations, or inappropriate modern paints that obscure or damage the original artwork.
  • Desalination Treatments
Application of appropriate methods (e.g., poulticing) to extract soluble salts that can cause efflorescence and damage to the paint and plaster layers.
  • Treatment of Biological Growth
Identification and careful removal of mold, algae, or lichen, followed by application of suitable biocides if necessary.
  • Structural Repairs to the Support Wall (in collaboration with specialists)
Providing conservation input when structural repairs to the underlying wall are necessary, to ensure the stability of the mural.
  • Fresco Detachment (Strappo & Stacco) and Relocation (as a last resort)
In rare cases where in-situ conservation is not viable due to extreme structural instability or environmental threats, we can perform controlled detachment of the paint layer or paint layer with its fine plaster (intonaco), followed by re-mounting on a new, stable support for relocation or museum display.
  • Filling of Losses & Reintegration
Filling lacunae (areas of loss) with compatible mortars and reintegrating the lost pictorial areas using discernible and reversible techniques (e.g., tratteggio, puntini) to restore aesthetic unity.
  • Protective Measures & Long-Term Maintenance Plans
Advising on and implementing protective measures and developing sustainable maintenance plans for the long-term care of the conserved wall paintings.

Our team is equipped to handle projects of varying scales and complexities, from small decorative fragments to extensive mural cycles in historic buildings, churches, and public spaces.

Let us help you preserve the enduring beauty of your wall paintings and murals.
