The conservation project focused on the historic “Tower of the Lions”, a defining 14th-century feature of the iconic Estense Castle. As an integral component of this medieval fortress, the tower has stood for centuries as a symbol of architectural and artistic endurance. Over time, exposure to environmental factors and natural aging necessitated a targeted preservation intervention to secure both its structural legacy and its historic stone elements.
Completed in 2009, the project was primarily aimed at the careful restoration of the tower’s sculptural elements. The intervention followed a meticulous approach to respect the ancient materials while ensuring the long-term safety and legibility of the artwork. During this phase, the team focused on the treatment, cleaning, and consolidation of the tower’s historic decorative and sculptural components, effectively preventing further stone decay.
Through this essential intervention, the sculptural integrity of the Tower of the Lions was successfully safeguarded, allowing future generations of visitors to safely appreciate one of the most significant medieval landmarks of the region.
